Best. Birthday. Ever.

August 1, 2010

Only because it’s his only birthday ever.  Kien is one.  I’m not sure how that happened, but we woke up on Saturday and – POOF! – our baby is a little boy.  What a difference a year makes.  Check it out.

I’m not going to lie – momentum was pushing us towards passing the occasion with nothing more than a few photos and extra kisses.  The visions of birthday parties with air bounces, clowns, climbing walls and 18 pounds of sugar disguised as various food groups were enough to exhaust me.  Was a party really that important?  It’s not like he’s going to remember it.  And the Top Chef episodes saved on my DVR aren’t going to watch themselves.  But, being the model parents that we are (swinging him upside down by his ankles is fun for the whole family, right?) we put together a casual gathering of friends and family.  Here’s the text from the evite:

Kien survived his first year of life, despite us.

Celebrate with us with a laid-back, informal open-house affair.  Come and go as you please.  We can’t promise Kien will be awake, in a good mood, or even fully clothed, but we’ll do our best.  He may be rested enough to perform his most impressive tricks:  screaming like a little girl, face planting on hardwood floors, eating edible and inedible items, balancing on precarious objects, growing a full mustache in ten minutes or less, filling his diaper with little effort, and catching flies with chopsticks.

We’ll have some of Kien’s favorite foods from our recent trip to Prague and Mallorca.

No need for presents.

He performed 5 of the 7 tricks.  And at the end of the day, he gave me the best gift of all.  He cuddled with me – rested his head on my shoulder, stared at me and giggled softly as he patted my cheek with his chubby little hands.  And then he slept until 6:40 the next morning.

Yea.  Best. Birthday. Ever.

Here are pictures from the wild throw-down.

Kien and GHC. He looks like he's playing hard to get, but he's really trying to rob the cradle.

"'Wasup, baby? Whatcha drinking?"

Yum. Birthday trifle of...yogurt and fruit?! Lame.
